Study of lupus treatment fails to meet primary endpoint

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Genentech Inc. and Biogen Idec Inc. said Tuesday that their Phase II/III study of Rituxan for systemic lupus erythematosus did not meet its primary endpoint. The drugmakers also said the study did not meet any of its six secondary endpoints. Although estimates vary, about 400,000 people in the U.S. are believed to have lupus, which is an autoimmune disease that damages organs and tissues. Shares of Genentech closed Monday at $73.16, while shares of Biogen Idec ended at $64.67.
